IRS picks lucky 13,000

Starting in November, the IRS as part of its latest National Research Program will randomly select 13,000 taxpayers for audit.  The IRS intends to have specific lines on tax returns confirmed through in-person audits with an IRS examiner.  In some cases the IRS will attempt to match the information reported on the tax returns with third party data in lieu of contacting the individuals for an audit.  It is unclear how this matching process differs from the current matching of 1099’s and other advices to income tax returns.
